Study Intent
This study examines the tray not as a utility object, but as a bounded ceremonial plane.
The investigation explores how painted avian and botanical compositions can establish hierarchy, direction, and containment within a defined field. Rather than dispersing ornament across the surface, the composition is structured to create clarity through contrast — white pigment suspended over a deep blue ground.
The study centres on disciplined contrast. The objective is not embellishment, but compositional authority. Through controlled articulation and border containment, function is transformed into gesture.
Movement itself becomes composed.
Spatial Behaviour & Resonance
The surface behaves as a travelling focal point.
When placed, it organises the surrounding objects. When lifted, it carries composition through space. The tray becomes a temporary architectural plane — defining hierarchy wherever it rests.
It suits interiors that understand layering, cultural reference, and controlled contrast. The study resonates with clients who value narrative objects capable of holding symbolic presence without theatricality.
Process & Material Calibration
The study was developed as a paired wooden tray investigation to test density variation, border articulation, and compositional direction.
The ground was prepared using PU-coated treatment over a structured HDF substrate to ensure pigment clarity and durability. Hand-painted white pigment was applied against the deep blue field, requiring precise control of line weight and negative space.
Edge containment was carefully calibrated to maintain hierarchy within the bounded surface. Approximately 80 hours were devoted to surface preparation and hand-painting. Here, craft operates as a compositional discipline.
Current Manifestation
Initially developed as a paired tray surface study.
Substrate: Structured HDF base with PU coating
Medium: Hand-painted pigment articulation
Application: Portable ceremonial plane
Expansion & Commissioning Potential
This surface logic may extend into:
• Larger ceremonial planes
• Wall-mounted panels / Framed painted compositions
• Integrated furniture surfaces /Architectural surface systems requiring contrast hierarchy
Commissioning allows recalibration of motif density, ground colour, scale, and border articulation — adapting the composition from intimate ritual object to architectural application without altering structural discipline.

Commissioned Adaptations
While initially developed at an intimate scale, each surface study holds potential for architectural recalibration. Density, motif structure, and material articulation can be restructured in response to wall dimensions, spatial rhythm, and site context. Commissioned adaptations evolve through the studio’s structured development framework.
