Surface Studies

Embroidered textile and crafted surface explorations developed with architectural expansion potential.

Selected works

The works presented here operate as surface prototypes — exploring material behaviour, proportion, and time within interior contexts.

Developed across varied commissions and moments, they share a consistent approach to resolution — favouring structural clarity over repetition.

This selection offers insight into how textile and veneer-based surfaces evolve when decisions are guided by spatial discipline rather than ornament.

All surface studies follow a structured commissioning framework outlined here.

Some works emerge from specific architectural constraints. Others are resolved as autonomous objects. Together, they reveal how material, proportion, and function are disciplined within interiors.

Engagement

Engagement with these works takes different forms.

Some are developed through commission, shaped by architectural context and project requirements.
Others are released in limited form and acquired as resolved objects.

The mode of engagement depends on scale, function, and spatial intent.

Surface Studies as Architectural Research

Gulzoe’s surface studies operate as structured material investigations — examining embroidery density, rhythm, and textile weight as architectural variables. Each study begins at an intimate scale, often manifested as a textile object or framed composition, but is conceived with the logic of surface systems in mind.

Through controlled density mapping, thread integration, and layered textile construction, these works explore how surfaces absorb light, stabilise spatial composition, and introduce material depth. They function as prototypes for larger architectural applications — textile wall panels, embroidered veneer surfaces, and commissioned wall interventions calibrated to proportion and site context.

Together, these surface studies form the foundation of the studio’s broader surface practice.
