Canopy Without Ornament
Study Intent
This study explores the willow not as imagery, but as a structural canopy—an exercise in continuity, fall, and suspended weight. It examines how self-toned materials can carry complexity without contrast, relying instead on density, direction, and tactile interruption. The problem addressed is how to hold intricacy within restraint, especially on inherently expressive silk. Spatially, the study demonstrates how quiet surfaces can command attention through proximity rather than distance. For interiors, it offers a way to introduce narrative depth without visual assertion.
Spatial Behaviour & Resonance
The surface behaves with softness and gravity, drawing the viewer closer rather than projecting outward. It belongs in interiors where silence is intentional—libraries, private lounges, contemplative bedrooms, and transitional corridors. The study resonates with sensibilities that value material honesty, cultural continuity, and surfaces that reveal themselves slowly.
Current Manifestation
Initially developed as a framed textile surface to study edge containment, fall, and internal rhythm. Size H 106cm X W 86cm
Expansion & Commissioning Potential
This study may expand into larger textile fields, wall-mounted surfaces, or integrated architectural panels where continuity and downward movement are desired. Commissioning allows modulation of canopy density, material restraint, or scale—shifting the study from intimate to architectural without altering its core logic.
Hours of Devotion
